The Valley of Flowers Trek is one of the most enchanting and picturesque treks in India, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. This high-altitude Himalayan valley, perched at around 12,000 feet, is renowned for its stunning display of alpine flora that comes alive during the monsoon season, primarily from mid-July to early September. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the valley is a botanist’s paradise and a dream destination for nature lovers and trekkers alike.
The trek begins from the small town of Govindghat and follows the route through the scenic village of Ghangaria. The trail winds through dense forests, gushing rivers, and waterfalls, gradually opening up to a vast, colourful expanse of wildflowers set against the backdrop of majestic snow-clad peaks. Over 500 species of flowers bloom here, including blue poppies, orchids, and the rare Brahma Kamal.
The trek is of moderate difficulty, suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers with decent physical fitness. It also offers the opportunity to visit Hemkund Sahib, a revered Sikh pilgrimage site located at a height of over 15,000 feet. With its unique blend of natural beauty, spiritual significance, and biodiversity, the Valley of Flowers Trek is an unforgettable Himalayan adventure.
